Changing Shape of Women

How has the average woman changed since the 60’s?

If we consider what beauty ideals and standards were back in the 1950s, the blonde bombshell that was Marilyn Monroe takes centre stage. During the height of cinema in the decade, she was widely regarded the most famous movie star in the world, and her penchant for fashion, lingerie, and Chanel no 5 made her figure one of the most covetable. Yet, apart from her incredibly tiny 22-inch waist, her body type and measurements were much more similar to the average size of women today. Standing at 5'5 with a 36D bust, she was widely different to the average woman of 1957, as discovered in a report by Bluebella.

In the last 60 years, the quintessential British woman has grown 3 inches, gained a stone and has increased her bra size from a 34B to a 36DD. Although many runway models and advertisements might suggest that the average woman is a small size 8, in reality, the report found that Ms. Average in the UK is actually a size 16. She also lives a much healthier lifestyle; she is likely to exercise at least twice a week and will consume 2,300 calories a day compared to the 1,800 calories consumed on average 60 years ago. Modern culture's emphasis on health and fitness, as well as women having the freedom to live their lives however they please, means we're looking much more like Kim Kardashian in 2017, arguably the Marilyn of our time.

Changing Shape of Women

Speaking to Emily Bendell, Bluebella's chief executive, it seems the dramatic shift in size, shape, and lifestyle of the average woman has had an effect on the fashion industry, "she has changed from being quite petite to [having] a much more fuller figured silhouette which has presented real challenges for designers and lingerie brands."

But our bodies are not the only things that have caused the fashion industry to grow; the invention of the washing machine as well as women entering the workforce and having their own disposable income has altered spending habits on clothes and fashion. Compared to an average £10 weekly wage in 1957, an average wage nowadays would be placed at around £530, and she will devote 30% more of her income to her wardrobe as a result. "This is reflected in the size of her lingerie collection, which is twice the size of a 1950s woman,” Emily says, “she now has an average of 12 bras compared to just six in the 1950s.”

“Today's women see lingerie and nightwear as fashion crossover pieces, a trend not seen back in the 1950s,” continues Emily. “At Bluebella we are creating lingerie and nightwear collections to reflect this changing body shape from stylishly chic everyday pieces to show-stopping provocative items designed to inspire and empower.”

So we're taller, healthier and apparently much bustier, but how else have our bodies changed? According to the report, whilst Marilyn Monroe was the biggest movie star of her time, and Jennifer Lawrence is notably ours, brunette beauty Natalie Wood was a lot closer to the national average. In 1957, the average-sized British woman was 5ft 2ins tall, weighed 9stone 10lbs, had size 3 feet and wore a dress size 12, with a slim waist of 28 inches. Her life expectancy was also capped at 68, while luckily women these days now grace 83 on average. We're also sporting much larger feet at size 6 (to balance out our new found height) and our waist is at a 34 to match a size 16 average.

So from Marilyn Monroe to Jennifer Lawrence and Kim Kardashian, the extraordinary ways our bodies have changed encompass a wide range of sizes and shapes that are all undeniably sexy. Bluebella has adapted to the changing shape of modern women by creating MORE by Bluebella for the fuller busted woman, bringing its design ethos to the DD-G cup market.

International Women's Day - #BeBoldForChange

For some of us lucky enough to live in societies and cities dedicated to striving for equality, gender bias can at times be an almost invisible struggle. Powerful confident women are in our place of work, amongst our friends and in our professional networks. Much progress seems to have been made.

And yet… the gender pay gap in the UK remains at 7% for women without children and leaps to a staggering 21% for those with children and recent figures suggest 1 in 5 women in will at some point in their lives experience sexual assault. The Everyday Sexism Project has highlighted the casual sexism that infiltrates most areas of our society and we have been dismayed to witness the sexist rhetoric displayed recently at the highest level of global politics. And for many women around the world the most basic human rights are still denied based on gender alone.

International Women's Day means different things to different people, but the global focus is on equality and a celebration of women and all their achievements.

Throughout ancient and modern history, women have collaborated and lead purposeful action to redress inequality in the hope of a better future for their communities, children and themselves. Whether through bold well-documented action or through humble resistance that never made it into the history books, women have and continue to unite for equality.
International Women's Day

The Bluebella Team taking part in the #TiedTogether campaign – the movement by the fashion industry in support of solidarity, unity and inclusiveness

Along the way, as part of this almighty struggle one particularly powerful and effective movement brought lasting and significant change. The Suffragette movement began in the early 1900s and forged a globally united community that worked together in hope and action for equality. It was the Suffragettes who started International Women's Day, with the first officially named "lnternational Women's Day" event held in 1911.

To this day, International Women's Day continues to be a powerful platform globally that unifies tenacity and drives action for gender parity, while celebrating the social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women.

Here we find out how some of our favourite women feel about being a woman in 2017 and what they have pledged for International Women’s Day

Tigerlily Taylor - International Women's Day
Tigerlily Taylor is Daughter of the Queen drummer Roger Taylor and supermodel Deborah Leng, Tigerlily is already a society favourite, having graced the cover of Tatler and appearing regularly in Vogue.

Who is your inspirational woman?

My mother. She raised my siblings and I as a single mother and is, and has always been the strongest, most unique and independent woman I know.

How do you feel about being a woman in 2017?

Fantastic. The women I surround myself with are smart, strong individuals who are not afraid to voice their opinions; I feel blessed to have the privilege of their company. Due to certain changes recently made in Western society which have unfortunately provided ignorant, prejudiced people with a platform, we must be particularly cautious of the perpetuation of hate and alienation. However, having observed the protests happening around the world I have felt an immense sense of pride and love towards the human race as the extraordinary power of solidarity continues to be exhibited by brave, compassionate individuals.

Due to certain recent changes, we must be particularly cautious of the perpetuation of hate and alienation. Hold your own sisters! Together we are an irrepressible force.

Stef Paralympian - International Women's Day

Stef Reid is a 5-time World Record holder and has won medals at the last three Paralympic Games and took home a silver medal from Rio 2016. She was also the first British amputee to model at London Fashion Week.

Who is your inspirational woman?

I am inspired by my mum and my sister.  They take risks, they fight back when life gets tough, and they love fiercely even when it is hard.

How do you feel about being a woman in 2017?

I love being a woman.  Never before has there been so much opportunity. Sometimes I feel the weight of responsibility of having such choice and freedom.  It is important to me that I use it well

International Women's Day
Emily looks after Bluebella’s production process from initial concept to final design samples. She also creatively curates our social media platforms. Emily boasts 32 tattoos and is a particularly talented doodler.

Who is your inspirational woman?

Annie Lennox is not only a hugely talented musician but an ardent social and political activity, particularly for children and women. She is an example of someone on a platform really using her position and her audience for positive change.

How do you feel about being a woman in 2017?

It is both a distressing and an empowering feeling. I am more aware of gender bias than I have been at any other point in my life and have seen this bias be flouted in the political sphere and actively embraced. However I have also seen women (and men too, of course) come together against this to form a powerful sense of community and spirit. This weekend, for instance, I was at CARE’s Women’s March over Tower Bridge, in recognition of IWD. It was an amazing thing to be part of, and Annie Lennox was there! Plus I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by some totally kickass women, without whom life, frankly, would be V dull

International Women's Day
Karolina looks after Bluebella’s much loved web community from customer care to social media as well as generally organising us all! Karolina is known for her fast-changing rainbow coloured locks, love of chick flicks and feminist literature.

Who is your inspirational woman?

Deborah Frances-White - She's a business woman and a comedian. She makes it okay to make mistakes while also helping women to achieve their goals in feminism, comedy and business. She is also absolutely hilarious.

How do you feel about being a woman in 2017?

It feels more exhausting than ever before, but it also feels more important than ever before.
International Women's Day
Ally looks after our fabulous wholesale accounts, there is nothing she loves more than making a Bluebella stockist happy with a slick delivery. Ally is the lucky owner of an incredibly cheerful disposition which brings good cheer wherever she may go.

Who is your inspirational woman?

For always smiling, being utterly selfless and bringing all the laughs no matter what adversity she faces; my ever-resilient nan.

How do you feel about being a woman in 2017?

As a woman in 2017 I feel eternally grateful to be surrounded by friends and family who continue to support and encourage me on a daily basis and have never believed there should be limits on what I can achieve because of my gender. Equality often feels a long way off these days, so in the interim I'm giving thanks for those already showing respect and love to the women in their lives!

In our mission to make every day that bit more exciting we are delighted to launch the most exciting adverts ever seen on public transport before, from yours truly, Bluebella.

A lucky fleet of London taxis are now adorned with a moving picture adverts of our designs including the much talked about ‘Alyssa’ bra, which lets wearers undo its bow to reveal or conceal.  Alyssa has already made it into the headlines recently for it’s dare-devilish design.
To bring you a glimpse of what’s to come, and to celebrate the city we love the very best, the Bluebella team hit London’s biggest monuments for a photoshoot with our gorgeous model, Jess.

As a London brand, we hold the city very close to our hearts. Bluebella CEO Emily Bendell said:

We are all deeply in love with London here at Bluebella and the city endlessly inspires us. So we couldn’t think of anything better and more quintessentially London than a black cab. The new digital adverts on the roofs of the cabs are perfect to bring our products to life, but we do ask that only the passengers on the road watch the advert and not other drivers!”

Valentine's Day - How to write a card

Cat got your tongue this Valentine’s day?

Valentine’s day is the perfect excuse to treat yourselves and your partners to something special, be it fun, cute, sexy, or romantic. Shakespeare, famously compared his lover to a summer’s day, while Elizabeth Barrett Browning soulfully wrote of the depth of her immortal love. But whether you’re in the throes of a whirlwind romance or in it for the long haul, choosing the right words isn’t always easy. If the most creative piece of writing you’ve done in the last 5 years is a ‘bappy hirthday’ on your best friend’s Facebook page, then the sonnet poem is probably not going to be your best bet. So for all those feeling daunted by the blank stare of empty Valentine’s cards, we’ve come up with some different ideas to spice up that page.

Looking for inspiration?

Valentines Gift Lingerie
If you’ve come here looking for some good lines, then good lines we shall give. If you’re a new item or looking to keep it casual, then cheesy chat-up lines are always a good bet. Here are some personal favourites:
‘You make my palms sweaty, knees weak, arms spaghetti ;)
‘Are you a camera? Because every time I look at you, I smile’
‘Did you read Dr.Seuss as a kid, because green eggs and…damn!’
If that is definitely not your style, and you are a hopeless romantic, then these ones are for you:
‘Your lips are like wine, and I want to get drunk.’ (Shakespeare)
‘I fell in love the way you fall asleep; slowly, and then all at once.’ (John Green)
‘Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze.’ (Elinor Glyn)
‘It was love at first sight, at last sight, at ever and ever sight’ (Nabokov)

Not a fan of the long gushy message?

If that doesn’t do it for you, then keep it short and powerful. You don’t have to write about your feelings, but you could write about what you like about that person or what makes them special in your eyes (as let’s face it people love compliments and talking about themselves). If you’re especially allergic to Valentine’s cheese, then lace your compliments with humour - after all, nothing says British Valentine’s day more than an ironic card.

Prefer to cut straight to the point?

If you’re planning to surprise your partner with some saucy lingerie, why not place one of the small slinkier items into the card. You could add a short seductive message or simply let the gift do the talking. Alternatively, place a photograph of yourself in your brand spanking new lingerie sets inside your card and give it to your date earlier on. Hey, they might be a little distracted during the day, but they certainly won’t be able to take their mind off how smokin’ you are.
Perfect Valentines with Emerson Bra Red

Bored of Traditional Valentine’s cards?

As many times as you might have heard the phrase ‘a picture speaks a thousand words’…there’s no smoke without fire. How about ditch the Valentine’s card altogether and go for something with a bit more flavour? The Boomf personalised photographic marshmallows are hot right now, and a sure fire way to get clinch your partner’s heart through the stomach.

Still stuck?
