The Changing Shape of Women

From the fifties female to the modern woman: The team at Bluebella rolled up our sleeves to dig up the data on how the average British woman’s figure has changed in the course of 60 years.

So how much have women's figures changed exactly?

Well according to government statistics, Miss fifties stood at 5ft 2in tall, was a size 12 with a 34B cup and 28 inch waist, and weighed in at 9st 10lbs with a size 3 shoe.

Now, the modern woman stands at 5ft 5in, and is a size 16 with 36DD breasts and a 34 inch waist. She weighs 11 stone and wears size 6 shoes.

So not only is the average lady 3 inches taller, but she is curvier, wears bigger shoes, and has fuller breasts too!

As Bluebella CEO Emily Bendall says:

“the modern woman is likely to exercise at least twice a week - consuming 2,300 calories a day compared to 1,800 calories back then. She is much healthier than her Fifties counterpart.”

And the best news of all is that the modern woman is also a lot richer (hooray!), earning £530 a week instead of the measly £10 fifties females used to pocket.

Bluebella's CEO Emily added that the classic 2017 woman devotes:

“...around 30% more of her income to her wardrobe.This is reflected in the size of her lingerie collection which is twice the size of 1950s woman. She now has an average of 12 bras compared to just six in the 1950s.”

We certainly don't blame ladies for celebrating their bigger curves and pay checks with more lingerie!

Bluebella's Top Hot Trends for 2017

Because we’re so relieved the cursed year of 2016 is finally over, we’ve teamed up with our favourite bloggers to bring you a list of what trends we predict are going to be big this year…

THE GLORIFIED ROBE 

Everyone has been loving the 2016 Pyjama trend so much that not only is it continuing into 2017, but robes will be joining them in the wardrobe. This year is about the posh robe, the fancier the better! Our chiffon and satin range of kimonos are perfect. They will hug you in the morning, and work as a sultry overcoat in the evening. Who knew Hugh Hefner was so stylish?

KITTEN HEELS 

You might not have seen kitten heels on your feet since the days of Disney Princess dress-up, but they are back. It’s time to dust those kittens and get funky. Just try to avoid gaps in the pavement!

DECONSTRUCTED... EVERYTHING!

Fashion is moving away from perfect tailoring and tidyness, towards a more raw, relaxed and unfinished look. Think chaos at the factory: exposed linings and zippers, raw edges, odd seams and frays. Although we’ve been championing them for a while, it’s good news for Bluebella fans - bralettes will be a big feature of the 2017 wardrobe. 2016: The Trends We Loved

SHEER DELIGHT

This one was for the show offs. The sheer trend gave us way to showing off our favourite pieces like the Nova and Blake underneath gorgeous sheer shirts and dresses. As well as being able to wear our favourite sheer nightdresses as the classing LBD with a twist. Sheer bliss!

CHEEKY PEEK

A statement bra or body with a jacket was the go to look for most it girls this year. A favourite amongst bloggers and us here at Bluebella. The best thing about this looks is that it works both with casual and smart outfits. It's always better to make a (Bluebella) statement.

PYJAMARAMA

Don't we all dream of forever being able to live our lives in pyjamas. 2016 was the year. We just couldn't get enough of the Claudia and Sephy. Perfect for a casual office look paired with jeans or the Sephy as a flowy simple dress to show off your casual wear.

DENIM DAYS

We simply couldn't get enough denim in our lives in 2016 and pairing with delicate lace bodies just seemed too irresistible.

WHAT LIES BENEATH

84% of students have 'special' lingerie they save for dating

We all love lingerie, but we were all students once. We conducted a survey of 3290 of them in order to understand what they like and how to make them fall in love with Bluebella.

Eight out of ten students have 'special' lingerie they save for dating, according to a new survey. And more than two-thirds of students (68%) wear this 'occasion' lingerie when they go on a first date with a new partner.

Two-thirds of students (66%) reckon black is by far the sexiest colour for lingerie, followed by red (21%), other colours (7%) and white (5%).

The average female student owns between 16-30 pairs of knickers, picked by almost half of respondents (48%). Around one in six (15%) own between 31-45 pairs and 10% have more than 45 pairs. Just over a quarter (27%) own under 15 pairs.

The results come from a new survey of 3,290 students that we conducted with the help of Digin, who provide welcome boxes for UK students.

We found that students from Cambridge University were most likely to have special lingerie, followed by Southampton, Sussex, East Anglia and Manchester Universities. 

The survey showed that 84% of students have 'special occasion' underwear whereas only 16% don't have any at all.

29% of student always wear special underwear on a first date, 39% sometimes do it and only 32% make no extra effort with lingerie when they are seeing someone new.

Our CEO Emily Bendell said: "It's great that lingerie is an important part of many students' wardrobes and 84% have 'occasion' lingerie that they save for someone special. Our key message is to wear fabulous lingerie every day for yourself to feel amazing - never save anything for best. I set up Bluebella shortly after leaving Oxford and have never looked back. We've always been particularly popular with students. I like to think that this is because I created Bluebella for the younger me. I can remember the struggle to find great lingerie when you were living on a student's income. Students want to look great and gain the inner body confidence that great lingerie can give them"
